Happy Home

Bangladesh is one of the countries where we work. It is a country with very high poverty rates. Millions of people live in slums and countless children are marginalised and grow up literally in the streets.

Children suffer from malnutrition, while sexual abuse, child marriages and violation of children’s rights happen on a daily basis. It is estimated that more than 250,000 children in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, live in the streets.

The story of Happy Home

These difficult conditions created the need for the support of vulnerable girls that, typically, are the usual victims. Thus, ActionAid’s Happy Home became a shelter for vulnerable girls and from 2006, it has provided shelter, safety and security, as well as education to thousands of girls. In Dhaka, the area with the greatest problem, ActionAid set up 5 homes and, at the outset of this initiative, provided shelter and education to 150 young girls between 7 and 18 years old. In 2016, after all those years of operation, the 5 homes merged in one, in Mohammadpur, Dhaka, and to date we have been consistently improving the lives of these girls. 17,000 girls have been supported in the course of these years. And we keep going!

Happy Home needs you

The girls of Happy Home need your support. Currently, it provides accommodation to 86 girls, while another 11 are in the process of reintegration in the community, having already acquired the necessary qualifications and skills. With you on our side, we can continue and enlarge this valuable work. This project has given hope, relief, safety and security to thousands of girls throughout the years.
